The Toto Washlet S550e is the bidet equivalent of buying last year’s flagship phone: same core experience, mature firmware, lower price. It’s been on the market long enough that every quirk has been documented and every fix is a YouTube video away.

Who this is for

You want a Toto. You don’t want to pay Toto’s newest prices. You’re comfortable trading a bit of styling and a couple of incremental features for $400 in savings.

What we love

  • Same instant heating as the S7A. Unlimited warm water at a price below most competitors’ tank-based seats.
  • EWATER+ included. Toto’s electrolyzed-water self-clean is one of the best features in any bidet and it’s on this model.
  • Maturity. This unit has been around long enough that any failure mode you might hit is already solved on a forum.

Where it falls short

  • Air dryer. Not a Toto strength on any model in this price bracket.
  • The S7A is just nicer. If you can stretch to $1,800, the upgrade is noticeable.

Verdict

If you’re choosing between a Brondell Swash 1400 ($600) and the Toto S7A ($1,800), the S550e at $1,400 is the please-stop-agonizing middle path. It’s the Toto experience without the flagship tax. We recommend it to anyone shopping the luxury tier who isn’t a spec maximalist.
